It looks like I may like a genre called hyperpop. Spotify’s hyperpop playlist has a few artists I already know and enjoy. Discovery ahead. (Update: an entire playlist of hyperpop is too much. I like some hyperpop artists and songs. I don’t like hyperpop as a genre.)
This set by 100 gecs at Boiler Room in L.A. is all. over. the. place. But it’s a lot of fun. Check out 59:00 for a wild taste. And do read the comments. Speaking of 100 gecs, the video Acai playing the 10,000 gecs album on Clone Hero Drums for the first time mesmerized me. Wut.
Spotify playlist for the week of August 8, 2023.
- Optometry – Technicolor - Silent Servant Remix
- Optometry – Whatever You Need - Dntel Remix: Sounds like The Postal Service. Makes sense, since Dntl is Jimmy Tamborello is The Post Service.
- Moderat – Milk - Sped up Version: Funny. I didn’t care much for the normal-speed version of this song. But I dig this one.
- Paradise Circus – Nyctophile: Starts with a weird distorted sample from Gentle Giant’s Knots.
- MISOGI – ULTRABLAST: More hyperpop.
- Underhill – Dead Foot: Current Value had another project called Underhill for a while. It’s a little less drum n’ bass, a little more like older Amon Tobin and/or Two Fingers.
- Current Value – Heavy Weight: On the same EP as Underhill’s Dead Foot.
- Rachael Dadd – Feather
- Noname – beauty supply: Jazzy hip-hop. I dig it. I like this album even more than her 2016 Telefone.
- Son Lux – Easy: This is so different from the original song! Fascinating!
- Son Lux – No Crimes (New History): This remix feels even more Son Lux-y than the original song.
- Tomu DJ – Band Man
